Since 1839, Platteville has been preparing scholars to become educators. It all started when the Presbyterian Church, known as the Congregational Church today, established a private school called Platteville Academy. The number of students who enrolled in the academy increased significantly throughout the years.
In 1842, the Platteville Academy held classes in a church that stood on the corner where Bonson and Cedar Street meet. The location changed again in 1853, to the building that is currently known as Rountree Apartments. Since its enrollment and reputation continued to expand, the Board of Normal School Regents voted to officially transform the academy to Platteville Normal School, making it the first school of higher education for aspiring teachers in Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin – Platteville is the proud result of this community’s commitment to education.
It’s no secret that teachers lay the foundation of our communities through their dedicated passion for education.
